Half-Life is probably the best-known PC game to ever be released. Counter-Strike is the most played multiplayer game on the planet. When CS 1.6 was released with Steam everyone became upset with how Steam was being used. Everyone that has used Steam knows that it can be painful and frustrating at times. For several months I hated Steam but with the upcoming release of Half-Life 2 I have come to appreciate what Steam has to offer.
For those people that have never used Steam it is a gateway program that allows you access to Half-Life and all of its various expansions and mods. Recently those who have preordered or gotten through other means (videocard purchase) a serial code for Half-Life 2 were able to test Counter-Strike Source and also preload Half-Life 2 onto their machines. The newest release of CS has some great add-ons while still sticking to the original feel. While gamers were only allowed to try the famous Dust map with the initial release I believe that a few others are on their way.
While I do like the way Steam has given people a chance to try the new CS I also like what Steam is starting to become. Gamers can now purchase games through Steam. You can order Counter-Strike: Condition Zero from Steam and it will load it instantly onto your computer. I see great possibilities in this new technology.
However, the thing I like the most about Steam is their great way of teasing gamers. Maybe some of you have seen that you can preload Half-Life2 onto your computer. This essentially means that the exact instant the game because available gamers will be allowed to play it. Right now I have currently had two downloads onto my computer and I anxiously look forward to the day when Steam finishes my download.
